Gallery Instructions
In this tutorial there are a number of "screenshots" or pictures of the website allowing you to see where things are located on the page. These are just pictures, not active windows and clicking on them will do nothing. The best way to proceed is to move this tutorial window off to one side so you can see the actual web page and do whatever the tutorial says to do to the actual web page.
Be sure to read the whole tutorial from top to bottom.
Registering
To register, so you can upload pictures, click on the "Register" button in the menu frame at the left of the page (the ninth button from the top):
That will take you to the registration screen below. Enter the information requested and click on the register button at the bottom. Your registration will not be effective immediately. The webmaster will review and then activate your account and you should receive an email informing you of its activation.
Logging In
Once your registration has been confirmed, you can log-in using the "Log In" button in the main menu frame on the left. This will take you to the gallery. You can also navigate to the gallery without logging in by using the "Photos" button in the menu frame. You must have logged in, though, before you can add albums, items in albums, and add comments to both albums and items using the action menu in the small frame at the left of the gallery page:
Breadcrumbs
Navigation in the gallery is facilitated by a "breadcrumb" bar which helps you to keep track of where you are. For example, in the screenshot below, the cursor shows your present level in the galleries. To navigate to the beginning gallery or the "Surprise Valley Gallery," simply click on that part of the "breadcrumb" and it will take you back there.
Adding Albums
You can add albums and/or separate photos at any level. For example if you have a number of photos that don't fit an established category under SVHS photos, like say, FFA photos, you can click on "SVHS Pictures" and then select "Add Album" on the left and it will give you the following screen:
Or if there were some reason you wanted to insert a sub-album into the 1926 yearbook, you could navigate there, click on "Add Album" and get the same screen. Notice the difference in the "breadcrumb" bar. The procedure for adding the album is the same no matter what level you are adding to. You must give the album a unique filename which goes under "name," a title, which will be what is displayed underneath it on the webpage, and, optionally, an album summary, which will go under the title. The keywords are to enable the site search engine to find the content and is optional along with the description. Once these fields have been filled as needed, then click on "create" at the bottom and the album will be created
Adding Items
Adding "items" (photos and movies, etc.) is a little more complicated since you have to know exactly where your picture files are on your computer's hard drive like you would if you were going to send an attachment via email. Other than that, it's not particularly difficult. Navigate to the particular album you want to add to and then click "Add Items." You'll get the screen below. Click on the topmost "Choose File" button and find your picture file where resides on your hard drive and select it. the filename will show up next to the button. Give it a caption. Go on to the next button below it and do it again. You'll have to click on the "More Upload Boxes" button to get more "Choose File" buttons to upload more pictures. You can upload as many pictures as you want as long as the total size doesn't exceed 8 MB. None of the separate files may exceed 2MB as the site is now configured. When done, click on "Add Items" at the bottom. Also, make sure that the "Create Thumbnails" box is checked so that the pictures will have thumbnails. It should be noted that if you add an album, the album won't have a thumbnail until items have been added to it. The first item's thumbnail will be the thumbnail for the album.
Adding Comments
You can add comments to pictures and do us a great service since we have no idea who some of the people in many of our pictures are. If you happen to know who they are, you could add a comment identifying them. In the example below, we don't know who these two are. To comment, simply navigate to the picture in question, and click on "Add Comment."
Provide a subject in the field provided, then add the comment in the box below. Be sure and click on "save" below the box when done.
Photo Sizing
Be aware that the pictures can be displayed in two sizes. In the screenshot below notice that the size can be switched between 640X431 and 3833X2583 pixels. The smaller size will load more quickly and fit more easily on the page. The larger size will load much more slowly and, since it is the full size of the file, usually will not fit on the page. You'll need to scroll around on it to see the whole picture. Even so, some of the details at this size are amazing! Enjoy!
Searching the Site
There are two ways to search the site, one for pictures and one for text. If you want, say, to search for pictures of family members, you can select the "PHOTOS" button in the left frame and in the menu selection for "FAMILIES (LAST NAME)" a sub-menu button labeled "SEARCH" will show up. Selecting that will take you to the site search screen below. Typing in a last name and hitting "search" will result in a display of albums and pictures that contain that name in their titles, descriptions, or keywords. You can also search for any other keyword like a town name, event, etc. You can get to the same place by going to the "MAIN GALLERIES" section under "PHOTOS" and using the search field at the middle left of the Main Gallery page.
To find a reference to a name or other keyword in the textual material on the site, use the "SEARCH TEXT" button at the bottom of the left frame. Type in the search term and you will receive one or more links to the document that contains the term. Once you select a link and get to the document, you may need to use your browser's "find on this page" function to further zero in on the occurences of the term on that page.

Blogging
A blog is a place to publish stories and commentaries on the web. Selecting the "BLOGGING" button in the left frame will take you to the SVHPS Blog which is hosted by www.blogger.com. If you wish to publish a story on the blog, simply send the text of the story to us at svhps.webmaster@frontiernet.net and we will add it to the blog for you. If you want to comment on a story, you can do it on your own by selecting the "comments" link at the bottom of the story:
You will be asked to choose an "identity" which will then allow you to post your comment. Your SVHPS website registration won't work here since this site is hosted by Blogger.com and not SVHPS. After you have submitted your comment, it will be available to eveyone who selects the "comments" button for that story. If you don't want to register a google/blogger account, you can always send us your comment and we will add it for you.
Finally, if you have any questions concerning how to use the site, don't hesitate to email the
Webmaster of the site.
